My Country Was Stolen, 2015

$1700

This oil painting is an illustration of one of the famous novels of P. Howard (born: Jenő Rejtő, a writer of Hungarian origin, 1905 – 1943). The phrase Stolen My Country in Dirty Fred, the Captain, inspired me to reinterpret it. The melancholy, depressed central figure sits in an empty, stimulus-poor, dimly lit room where he thinks about his destiny. It has a self-invented “Enterist” armband that refers to the resumption of life, the eternal “enter”. How to start life again in a better country and better world, if the old has been stolen. The child’s toy lying on the table, the buzzing snail, symbolizes this eternal rotation, the confinement of thought, and how hard it is to break out of these thoughts.
